Located just west of Steilacoom in the Puget Sound, McNeil has hosted federal and state prisoners for 132 years. Even Charles Manson visited for a few years in the early 1960's.

The boat ride is rather scenic. The giant Mt. Rainier typically towers in the East and the Olympics peak out in the West. This particular day, everything - the water, the other islands, both shores - was enveloped in fog. Pea soup fog. I bundled up and sat on the top deck, enjoying the cool mist and grateful for the captain's warning that he would intermittently blow the horn. We plugged along in the quiet.

Some ten minutes into the cruise, hurried footsteps ran up to the bow, the metal of the deck bouncing. It was the inmate crew. "Dolphins!" they shouted.

And there they were. Six, or maybe eight, sleek, strong animals, powering alongside the ferry. Muscular and black, they danced in the wake, not unlike the Amsterdam kayaker I once saw chasing a canal tour boat, oh so eager to surf. The animals – I later found out they're Dall's porpoises – moved with incredible grace and speed and showed no sign of effort as they kept up with our nine knots. There's a pedestrian waiting to cross the street as I head through a traffic light; a cyclist is in the bike lane beside me. Up ahead, I see something in the middle of the road. It's short, dark, and lazily walking in the middle of my path. I slow down as I approach, trying to ascertain what is in my way. I come to a complete stop, a few feet from a beautiful male peacock. The cyclist catches up to, and he too stops and stares.
